Washed Out – Amor Fati

In June 2009, Ernest Greene moved back to his parents in Perry (Georgia) holding a degree in library sciences. Finding a library job while trying to save money for a wedding at the same time was harder than he expected. In the night, while his parents were asleep, Greene put on his headphones and started recording electronic music on his laptop. The music expressed some level of failure that he was dealing with, using melodies and lyrics that reminded him to
stay positive.

Although he never planned on releasing anything, Greene decided to upload some of his songs to MySpace by the name of Washed Out. Over the course of a few weeks Washed Out was being picked up by number of influential music bloggers. Soon after that he found himself releasing two EPs in August and September 2009.

Amor Fati is taken from his debut album Within and Without, released on July 12.

Carter Tanton – Murderous Joy

Carter Tanton (formerly known as Tulsa and current member of Lower Dens) announced his forthcoming full length, Freeclouds. Slated for a November 1st release, the album marks four years since his celebrated Tulsa EP, I Was Submerged.

Tulsa spent two years writing and recording their follow-up to the EP, but it was never released due to label and legal struggles.  Discouraged, the band broke up and Carter focused his energy on his role as a guitar player in Marissa Nadler´s band, touring extensively and eventually recording and arranging parts for her recently released self-titled record.  His experience working on Nadler’s record ultimately served as the catalyst that inspired him to record Freeclouds. Many of the tracks written for Freeclouds, and the album’s title, reference David Bowie’s Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud.

In anticipation of the LP, Tanton has released his first single Murderous Joy. The mp3 can be downloaded from Western Vinyl.

Dutch Uncles – Cadenza

Dutch Uncles are an indie band from Manchester comprised of Duncan Wallis, Robin Richards, Daniel Spedding, Peter Broadhead and Andy Proudfoot. The sub-20 year olds like to pull funny faces, wear checked shirts, and play tighter than their drainpipe jeans. They are well known for their use of atypical time signatures within a pop context and their influences includes several bands such as The Smiths, King Crimson, XTC and Talking Heads.

Debut album Cadenza, released on April 25,  is a record which, in addition to the cross- dressing videos and live shows in churches with 10-piece orchestras, puts clear blue water between them and the Mancunian macho-rock clichés of the recent and not so recent past.
