Crushed Beaks – Close-Ups

Crushed Beaks are a duo from London, comprised of Alex Morris and Matthew Poile. Fuzzy walls of noise meld with pounding drums and swirling melodies to create a sound that is much larger than its constituent parts.

Starting life as a bedroom project in 2010, they bonded over a shared love of Italian horror films, and a handful of hastily recorded demos quickly developed into a ferocious live show.

A few months ago they set to work recording in a church and a wendy house. Debut single Close-Ups / Sun Dogs was released on 21st November 2011.

Lightyear – It Beats

Lightyear is the solo electro-pop project of Brooklyn based songwriter Lauren Zettlerbrand. She decided to adopt the name during a period of transition, when she realized that “things just didn’t feel right.”

Zettler was raised in Indiana by scientist parents. Although she tried to make her parents proud by taking chemistry, classical piano was what really stuck, and what led her to Berklee College of Music in Boston. She took a break from the piano after graduating and started working for a large music company, operating under the belief system that she needed to act safe, make guaranteed money and work hard.

But Lightyear finds Zettler returning to writing on her native ivories. The resulting songs rely on piano-built melodies draped in starry keyboard accents and pounding electronic drums.

It Beats is off her debut EP All of the Miles, released in November.

Au Palais – Tender Mercy

Au Palais are brother-sister twosome Elise and David Commathe, originally from Toronto and now located in London. Their dark and ambient beats bring Gothic and Pop to a new level, soliciting comparisons with M83, Austra and Zola Jesus.

Tender Mercy is the title track to Au Palais’ Tender Mercy EP, released on 28 November 2011. On Facebook they announced to shoot an official video in the next few days, until then here’s an unofficial version.

Little Racer – Split For The Coast

Little Racer (Elliot Michaud, Ish Nazmi and Mike Seay) are a three-piece from Brooklyn, formed in 2009. Their music combines the energy of New York’s Garage rock scene with a retro West-coast soul and pop influence.

The band have just released their debut single via the Young and Lost Club label. Written by Elliot after his girlfriend moved from LA to join him in New York, Split For The Coast is the tale of how she was turned off by the coldness, both in the climate and people of NYC, finally confessing she couldn’t live in NY anymore.

Cave Birds – Some Lightning Thrill

“Caves. Natural habitats for reclusive behaviour. Rare species. Secret projects. Night visionaries.

When I think of Cave Birds and the series of noir-pop songs that have surreptitiously leaked out of Leeds over the past few months under that name, I think of the great anti-social artisans of songwriting; Syd Barrett, Talk Talk, Kate Bush… Not just the songs, but every detail of the production, like Brian Wilson with the all the sunshine and pastoralism sucked out and and a vile of danger injected.

And then you hear Some Lightning Thrill, a tale of devastating love. Is it a far reaching call-to-arms or a deep echoing cry for help? All I know is it’s a big song, bursting with pain and passion, not something you can stash under the floorboards. Sometimes secrets need to be shared.”

- Leagues O’ Toole, Foggy Notions, 2011.
