Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Mosquito

Discovered in the wake of the Strokes’ popularity and the subsequent garage rock revival, New York’s art punk trio the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are comprised of singer Karen O, guitarist Nicolas Zinner, and drummer Brian Chase.

O. met Chase at Ohio’s Oberlin College and met Zinner through friends after she transferred to NYU. Zinner and O. formed the band in 2000. Originally, they were a folky duo called Unitard, but they went electric after being inspired by Ohio’s legendary avant punk scene. After the drummer they recruited initially bowed out, Chase joined the lineup.

Mosquito is taken from their same-titled album.

The Ramona Flowers – Lust and Lies

Bristol based five-piece The Ramona Flowers meld electronics with guitars – as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Phoenix have done before them – and with a mutual love of Lamb, Bloc Party and Baths, are all set to tackle the new music coalface.

After meeting at university and forming a three-piece, Dave (keyboards), Wayne (bass) and Sam (guitar) brought in vocalist Steve and drummer Ed to add the final piece in the puzzle. They’ve been working at it ever since.

Lust and Lies is taken from the Lust and Lies EP, out now.

AM & Shawn Lee – Two Times

After listening to Lee’s 2004 album Music and Rhythm: Ubiquity Studio Sessions, Vol. 1, AM contacted Lee and the duo quickly discovered a shared love of various ’60s and ’70s sounds, including Brazilian tropicalia, psychedelic-tinged soft rock, Italian film music and more.

A long-distance songwriting partnership developed online with the musicians sending tracks and ideas back and forth. In 2011, AM & Shawn Lee released the full-length studio effort Celestial Electric.

Two Times is taken from their new album  La Musique Numerique.

Young Man – In A Sense

Young Man crafts a dreamy atmosphere of layered vocals, airy guitar, and looped drums around founder Colin Caulfield’s contemplative lyrics.

Caulfield began the project in 2009 while studying English and French at Loyola, posting original compositions alongside his covers of artists like Animal Collective, Bon Iver and Beach House to his YouTube channel. By summer 2010, Young Man signed to the Frenchkiss label, which released debut EP Boy shortly thereafter.

In 2011,Young Man toured with Cold War Kids, Fanfarlo and Grouplove, and conceptualized releasing a trilogy of albums. That September, he offered the first installment in the form of his full-length debut, the more fleshed-out Ideas of Distance, following the next May with the trickily titled Vol. 1, produced by the Sea and Cake multi-instrumentalist John McEntire and employing a full band for the first time.

In A Sense is taken from the third and final installment of the trilogy, Beyond Was All Around Me.
