Friends – Mind Control

Friends are Samantha Urbani, Lesley Hann, Oliver Duncan, Nikki Shapiro and Matthew Molnar, the latest band in a long line of cool-looking bands from the Brooklyn scene.

Friends only formed a year ago, but have worked hard and fast to quickly establish themselves. They create a multi genre sound that is typical in alt-indie circles, drawing on aspects of noise pop, new wave, no wave and dream pop, as well as poly-rhythms from the African Diaspora and American folk. Nevertheless they still have a sound that has definite roots in New York music culture, with effects, timbres and techniques that resemble earlier NYC artists such as Tom Tom Club and ESG.

Mind Control is the third single from the album Manifest.

Crushed Beaks – Close-Ups

Crushed Beaks are a duo from London, comprised of Alex Morris and Matthew Poile. Fuzzy walls of noise meld with pounding drums and swirling melodies to create a sound that is much larger than its constituent parts.

Starting life as a bedroom project in 2010, they bonded over a shared love of Italian horror films, and a handful of hastily recorded demos quickly developed into a ferocious live show.

A few months ago they set to work recording in a church and a wendy house. Debut single Close-Ups / Sun Dogs was released on 21st November 2011.
